Whether you're adding Hair extensions to add length or volume, you add more hair to your head. This means we need to add to your hair care routine. I used to think it required so much extra time, but that's not necessarily true. Sometimes, Hair Extensions can save us time. Read for more helpful tips to help your investment last longer.
Washing the extensions: Products matter. Make sure you're using hair extension-safe shampoo. When shampooing, apply shampoo only to the roots and the root of the wefts. Have your stylist show you so you have a visual. You'll rub your fingers together GENTLY. Apply conditioner midshaft to ends. NOT ON THE ROOTS.
Use an extension-safe leave-in conditioner when your hair is towel-dried. Apply before brushing. Leave-in conditioners should be used EVERY TIME you wash your hair.
Blow dry your hair everytime you wash your hair. Be sure to dry it thoroughly to avoid knots.
Pro tip: You know those days you don't feel emotionally ready to wash your hair? I hear you! Separate your hair from where your row starts. Tie your extensions back into a low ponytail. Now, just wash the top of your hair. Yes, throw your head over the sink and get that shampoo lathered up. It's not the most comfortable, but it gets the job done.
Brush, Brush, Brush! WHEN IN DOUBT, BRUSH. I recommend keeping a brush in your car or purse. This is an essential step in keeping your extensions tangle-free.
Use hair oil. Add hair oil to your night routine. Oil them every night. The Hair extensions are dead hair, so they don't have that natural oil. The weft gets in the way of absorbing your natural oil.
Try Heat-less styles. A simple hairstyle that helps take styling time away is heatless curls. Even a simple braid at night will help give you a curl/wave.
Always use heat protectant. The heat will dry out your extensions. I like the hair shield from Davines because you can spray it in your hair and brush it through. It smells fresh and leaves the hair with the perfect amount of shine.
Use a silk or satin pillowcase. Yes, this does help with frizz from that morning hair.
Chlorine and ocean water are not your friends. Before going in the water, wet your hair with water and apply a leave-in conditioner. Then, braid your hair or bun it up.
Sunscreens can turn your hair orange. Look at the back of your bottle; avoid these two ingredients: avobenzone and Ocrylene.
